It will be reported all over the net today. While I prefer to say “Free Software”, English, unfortunately, is horrible in expressing the right sentiment here – that of feeedom.
Perhaps it is really timely that Red Hat has announced that they have filed a friend of the court briefing in the US to limit software patents.
Looking at the Singapore context, our laws do not support nor deny support of software patents. But from all my queries with the IPOS, it seems that software patents crept into Singapore via the Singapore-US Free Trade Agreement signed a few years ago. I am hoping that the new law minister will see that it is valuable to spent time to look at software patents and consider legislation barring it officially in Singapore.
