Holding up half the sky

Women hold up half the sky. - Mao Zedong

That is a statement that I can agree with even if I totally disagree with the politics of the person is attributed to have said it.

I applaud the Singapore Computer Society in the 100 Women in Tech in Singapore effort last week where the SCS, my professional body, celebrated the contribution of these 100 individuals to all things tech in Singapore. Congratulations to all of them for they will inspire and motivate more women to get on board the IT train for the betterment of society as a whole.

Diversity of thought, world views, life experiences makes for a vibrant and thriving society and industry. It is indeed heartwarming to read of the successes of these 100 women and how they are contributing to both the industry as well as their respective organization. Some of them are entrepreneurs, some of them are movers, some of them are pushing the boundaries of what is possible.

I would love to see the day when the statement in the picture is indeed true in the IT industry. Not just in various roles in an organization, but in the hard tech roles. The scientists, the reseachers, the inventors, the innovators. We are still far from getting to that 50%. But we now have a start. A very big start.
