Happy to read that my alma mater’s efforts in promoting open source being recognized as one of the US’ top 10 coolest university networking labs! I remember how back in the mid-80s when I was attending school there, we were connected to the ARPANet via a UUCP link through HP’s Corvallis facility, hp-pcd. That was then enhanced with a leased line and I remember the thrill I got when I did the following:
ftp funet.fi Connected to funet.fi. username (anonymous): ...
The mere fact that, sitting at a terminal at Dearborn Hall and ftp’ing to a site in Finland and actually connecting was a “Wow!” moment in my life. I disconnected it immediately for I was not sure who was going to pay for the connection or even if it was OK to do so. A note to Otto Gygax and his subsequent reply that it was just fine and the thanks to the US DoD, it is OK to connect anywhere you want to!
So, I am happy to see OSU continue to push the boundaries.
That picture of you from the Oregon Stater Awards is pretty nice. You should consider submitting it for the creation of a hackergotchi so that your blog has a face on Fedora planet ๐
Just a random thought.
But it’s always nice knowing to be surrounded by highly decorated people ๐
Thanks for the suggestion. My 11 year old son is doing a lot of stuff with gimp and I will get him to do the hackergotchi for me.
Where in .de are you?
Oh sorry, I forgot to use OpenID to authenticate.
I’m from Leverkusen which is right in the middle between Cologne and Dusseldorf.
