The announcement of Sun that they will open up the SPARC chip architecture under some open source license, could be seen as yet another inflection point in the tech industry.

The value of open source software being able to be freely modified, adapted, learned from has proven itself time and again, and in some ways, the core CPU is the last place left that was not already in this frame of reference. I congratulate Sun on this move, but I hope they will not chicken out and put the specs out on their CDDL license (which I think is a half-hearted attempt at really open sourcing).
