Resolutions galore!

Garfield’s New Year’s Resolution That Works!

As the Earth crosses a random point in space on its continuous journey around the Sun, no other creature other than Humans pick up drums, launch fireworks, blow whistles and exchange gifts, kisses, hugs saying “Happy New Year” and closing following that with “what’s your new year resolution?”.

The origins of that question, according to National Geographic, goes all the way to the Babylonians over 4,000 years ago.

While I am sure no one has ever kept to all of their resolutions, not even the Babylonian kings, I think it is really an aspiration. We should rephrase “New Year Resolutions” to “New Year Aspirations”. That’d be more apt and attainable without a sense of failure.

Jim Davis’ Garfield strip above that captures it all.

2025 has already starting out perfect: it is 45².

Or if you’d like to see a string of cubes, I present: 13+23+33+43+53+63+73+83+93 = 2025.

These resolutions might be more interesting for me: 1920×1080, 1440×1080, 1400×1050, 1280×1024, 1280×960, 1152×864, 1024×768, 800×600, 640×480, 320×240, 1680×1050, 1440×900, 1280×800, 1152×720, 960×600, 928×580, 800×500, 768×480, 720×480, 640×400, 320×200, 1600×900, 1368×768, 1280×720, 1024×576, 864×486, 720×400, 640×350. And, yes, I’ve picked 1920×1080 and am happy with that.

1920×1080 gives me 2073600 and 2073600/1024, gives me 2025! I’ve picked the right resolution that I can live with the whole year (yeah, #dadjokes).

That’s a lot of consistencies with 2025!

But what interests me more is what enters public domain in 2025. Notable works entering the public domain include Ernest Hemingway’s “A Farewell to Arms,” Dashiell Hammett’s “The Maltese Falcon,” and the character Popeye (yes that Popeye), along with various films and songs from 1929 and sound recordings from 1924. This means these works can be freely copied, shared, and adapted without permission, which, even though you can do so, it would be a good practice to acknowledge the source when copying it.

I really do look forward to what the next twelve months will unfold, but as Popeye said: “I’ll take all on one at a time!”!
